KZQSA SCSI device compatibility?

» close window

The Question is:

I have a MicroVAX 3400 with a ka640-a processor and a kzqsa SCSI adapter.
 Firmware shows v5.3, vmb 2.7.

The kzqsa sees the tape drive attached, but in attaching an external rrd43
cd-rom drive, it doesn't seem to see it. I have verified that the kzqsa is
set to factory addresses... can the rrd43 be used in this system? What am I
 missing, please?

Thank you!

The Answer is :

The KZQSA is supported for specific SCSI-1 devices, and only in very
limited device configurations. It is not suited as a generic SCSI-1
adapter. The controller is sensitive to the speeds of the particular
SCSI devices, and to the signal integrity of the bus.

As you do not identify the tape device, please contact your hardware
support organization for assistance. Expect to be asked details of
  the configuration.

  Existing discussion topics include (2004), (2545), (2648) and (5780).

As stated elsewhere, a more generic solution is the HSD05 or HSD10
series controller, but the OpenVMS Wizard would tend to replace this
(ancient) VAX system with a slightly more recent (used) VAX system
(and particularly one with native SCSI support), or with a more recent
(new or used) Alpha or Integrity system. Most any VAX system you will
acquire will be faster than the KA640 MicroVAX 3400 series, of course.
