Bootstrap and Halt Errors? Bad Hardware?

» close window

The Question is:

Hi,

I have an Alphaserver 400 running Openvms 6.2 1h3 on the drive DKA0:

Here are the symptoms :

#1 The system will need 1, 2 or 3 boot command in SRM console in order to
recognize a valid boot block. This will happen on the drive dka0: or even on
the CD with the binaries from 6.2 or 7.2 located on dka400:

#2 When the system will locate a valid boot block, the system initialize the
swap memory and the rest and then jump to the bootstrap and halt the Alpha and
 says :

halted CPU 0

halt code = 2
kernel stack not valid
PC = 0

The system will do the same from the HD or any CD.

I removed the memory from bank 1. Swapped in bank 1 the memory from bank 2. Put
all the memory back in place. Reset the CMOS settings with the jumper J29. Put
the DKA0: in an external drive and disconnected all internal SCSI devices and
 tried from the ext
ernal drive. Even tried to boot from a floppy to update the firmware. (firmware
 is 6.9 on the system)

Everything back to square one...

Any suggestions???

The Answer is :

It would appear that your system has a hardware problem, and
that diagnostics and repairs are needed. The obvious targets
for the diagnostics would be the integrity of the SCSI bus and
the SCSI controller, as well as the operation of the processor,
  motherboard and memory.

Please contact your hardware support organization for further
assistance, or the Assisted Services program if you seek to
maintain your own hardware, or HP Services if you wish repairs.
