Problems with Windows LPD Printing?

» close window

The Question is:

What limitations are there on the :rp field in the printcap file. Specifically
can you use the underscore, and is their a field length limit. Currently I am
trying to set up lpd queues to print to printer shares in a W2K server with
 share names like:
aprint001_ip, aprint001a_ip, aprint001b_ip
and when I print to the "b" printer - the reports comes out on the first printer.

Thanx.

The Answer is :

The OpenVMS Wizard cannot, does not, and will not encourage this
configuration; please use a network-attached printer and not a
host-served printer. JetDirect, terminal server, an integrated
NIC, or other smilar network hardware is readily available for
most any printer, and greatly simplifies the configuration
requirements while easing the support effort.

For general IP printing discussions, please start with topic
  (1020).

For information on what the Windows LPD server might or might
not support, please contact Microsoft support. For what OpenVMS
TCP/IP Services has sent, please check the logs on both ends.
(The OpenVMS Wizard would expect OpenVMS to send the appropriate
characters, but has no idea what might happen at the remote end.
Again, please configure and use direct network-connected printers.)
