Disks Logging Errors? Bad Blocks?

» close window

The Question is:

We have a disk drive that has 2 errors recorded on it and would like to run a
utility, if there is one available, to analyze the device. We tried the VMS
ANALYZE Command and got this message:

The Answer is :

Please contact your hardware support organization for assistance
with this and with other similar hardware problems or requests
for assistance with hardware diagnostics or troubleshooting.

For information on OpenVMS bad block handling, please see (6926).

In general, modern disks that are logging user-visible errors
are failing, and should be replaced. Tools such as formatters
are of little use with modern devices and can unfortunately tend
to accelerate the demise of the device -- the OpenVMS Wizard
recommends BACKUP be used first and foremost, to create a complete
saveset or archival copy of the data. Then BACKUP can be used to
restore to the target disk, and -- as is discussed in (6926) to
trigger bad block handling. But again, disks that are found to
be generating user-obvious errors tend to be failing.

If you wish to reset the error counts (without rebooting) and
continue -- and again, you will want to verify the disk BACKUP
for validity and currency -- you will want to review the error
  information in the OpenVMS FAQ.
