OpenVMS Operating System Support?

» close window

The Question is:

What operating systems are supported by OpenVMS?

The Answer is :

OpenVMS is an operating system, and it runs on various VAX, Alpha and
Itanium platforms, as well as on hardware emulations. The OpenVMS
operating system is packaged for each of these three hardware
architectures, and known respectively as OpenVMS VAX, OpenVMS Alpha,
  and OpenVMS I64.

Various hardware emulators have been implemented upon OpenVMS, allowing
other operating systems to bootstrap within the emulated environment.
Limitations here generally involve those of the operating system within
the emulated environment and of the emulated environment itself.

Various hardware emulators have been implemented on various operating
systems and hardware platforms, allowing OpenVMS to bootstrap within
the emulated environment. OpenVMS (of the appropriate architecture)
will operate on various of the available emulators, assuming sufficient
correctness of the particular hardware emulation that OpenVMS would be
  running upon.

For an introduction to OpenVMS and to the hardware platforms as well as
to some of the available documentation and historical information, please
see the OpenVMS Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document. For pointers
to some of the available hardware emulators, please see the FAQ.

VAX, Alpha and Itanium systems are available from various used-equipment
vendors, and HP offers new and potentially also refurbished Alpha and
Itanium (HP Integrity) systems. Licenses for OpenVMS are available.
(The OpenVMS Wizard will assume appropriate licenses for OpenVMS and
for any hardware emulator in use.)
