The DEC Fast EtherWORKS PCI 10/100 (DE500) is an early Fast Ethernet (10/100) NIC based on Digital Semiconductors popular DECchip 2114x family of highly integrated Ethernet controllers. When it was launched, DEC claimed that tests rated it faster than those from 3Com, Intel and SMC. Digital provided drivers for most operating systems in common use at the time, and many operating systems DEC did not directly support (BSD, Linux) have their own drivers.
As DEC fell apart in the late 90s, they started selling off product lines and divisions to other companies. Most of Digital Semiconductor (including Ethernet controllers and their remaining fab) went to Intel, so later drivers may report the DC2114x as an Intel chip. And most of the Digital Network Products Group which was responsible for network cards such as the DE500 went to Cabletron who spun it off as Digital Networks, so the DE500 may be identified as a Cabletron product by later drivers such as those included with Windows 2000 and up.
These are the latest drivers from DEC/Compaq. Cabletron and later Digital Networks were still providing these same versions as late as 2003.
