I had this problem and needed to apply the patch.
The patch is the file fifo_vnops.o that needs to be placed in the
/sys/BINARY directory before building a new kernel.
Without this patch Ileaf6 lets "zombi" processes that use a *lot of* system
resources (virtual memory).

Our site is running INTERLEAF6.1 on OSF3.2C. This is a patch that we obtained
from DEC to resolve the problem with the hangs. There are pathches for other
versions of OSF1 which resolve that problem.

We had this same problem on our 3.2C alpha's. After going round and round
with Interleaf and DEC, DEC finally sent a patch that fixed our problem. We
found no other solution.
