Font Problems

Most font problems involve missing, substandard or incorrectly substituted fonts. We will not accept artwork or electronic files that require TrueType fonts. Only Adobe Type 1 fonts may be used for offset printing. Adobe Multiple Master fonts are essentially Type 1 fonts and are acceptable. Type 3 fonts are quirky and print slowly. They should be avoided if possible.

It is legal for you to send fonts to us with your source file submissions. It is our responsibility to make sure that the fonts are deleted from our systems after we have preflighted your documents. We have a font library that includes all of the 2300+ fonts on the Adobe FontFolio8 CD-ROM. You will need to provide any screen and printer fonts from foundries other than Adobe. It is possible that we may not be able to accept sources containing Asian pictograph fonts (e.g., Kanji and Chinese).

Final form files (PostScript, EPS and PDF) should include all fonts needed to print them. Most PostScript printer drivers and Adobe Acrobat Distiller will allow you to include (embed) fonts in the file. We suggest that you include all but the standard 13 PostScript fonts. A larger set of 35 fonts are included with many Level 2 PostScript printers, but the standard 13 are always safe.

Please identify all fonts required to print your documents.

To summarize:

  • Adobe Type 1 and Multiple Master fonts are always preferred.
  • TrueType fonts are not acceptable.
  • Type 3 fonts should be avoided.
  • You will need to supply fonts not available on the Adobe FontFolio8 CD-ROM.
  • We cannot guarantee that documents containing Asian fonts will print.
  • List all fonts needed to print your job.
  • Embed all but the standard Adobe Type 1 13 fonts in your PostScript, EPS or PDF files. The standard 13 are:
