Microsoft Client Service for NetWare on Windows NT 3.51

A quick tour of the Microsoft Client Service for NetWare on Windows NT Workstation 3.51. It seems to be very similar or identical to the NT 3.5 client. No NDS support, no login script support. This time around the Novell client is substantially better.

Quick Tour

I'm starting off with a clean install of Windows NT Workstation 3.51. Well, almost clean - I installed Michal Necaseks Windows NT Video miniport driver for Virtual Box for better performance. It is pretty much a default install otherwise.

That means we've got to go install the client as its not installed by default. Open the Network Settings control panel and click Add Software.

Then select Client Service for NetWare from the list and click Continue.

This needs the CD of course. Put it in and click Continue.

Files are copied...

And its installed! Click OK to close the control panel.

Network things are configured...

IP protocol configuration. Defaults are fine - click OK.

More configuring...

Then we can restart.

Back at the login screen. Login as normal.

Pick a preferred server

But my account doesn't exist on the netware server! I clicked yes.

And created a new local user with a username and password that match my NetWare account.

Log out and login as my new local account.

Pick a server.

And we're logged in!

Nothing much is different in File Manager. Like the NT 3.5 client it the Microsfot one doesn't run login scripts.

So we've got to map network drives ourselves.

Then we can see network files. No other special functionality. No netware file properties or security.

There is a control panel applet

But not much in the way of settings.
