NetWare/IP Notes

NetWare/IP is the TCP/IP solution for NetWare 3.1x and 4.x. NetWare 5.x is able to run NetWare/IP as well but only with the help of a NetWare 4.11 or 4.2 server. For NetWare 3.1x it was a commercial product starting at US$500 for the 5 user version. On NetWare 4 and 5 it provided as a free download and was included on the IntraNetWare 4.11 CD.

The product isn't a true native IP solution - that wasn't provided until NetWare 5.0. When using NetWare/IP communication between the client and server still goes via IPX packets but those packets are placed inside of UDP packets. This does add some overhead but results in the switch from IPX to IP being transparent to client applications as they're still talking IPX while allowing the traffic to travel over IP-only links.

On NetWare 3.1x Netware/IP apparently doesn't include a DHCP or BOOTP server. Novell later released the DHCP Server from, I think, NetWare/IP 2.x (or some other product) as a free download. This works on NetWare 3.12, 3.2 and possibly 3.11 as well: DHCP2B.EXE, Readme. Probably not really necessary these days - DHCP servers aren't exactly hard to come by.

I've installed NetWare/IP on NetWare 4.11 twice now (probably 15 years apart) and the process is fairly involved. Unless you have a particular need for it its likely not worth the effort. My hope installing it the second time was that it might allow logging in from a Mac emulator without having to mess around with TAP interfaces and network bridges. That didn't work in the end. I put some (a lot) screenshots of the install process here.

Useful Information

Obtaining Version 2.x for NetWare 4.1 (or upgrading 4.11 to v2.2B)

Unlike version 1.1 for NetWare 3.1x, Versions 2.1 and 2.2x for NetWare 4.1x were available as a free download from ftp.novell.com. For version 2.1 the original downloads were NWIPSERV.ZIP for the server and NWIPWS.ZIP for the workstation bits. The original versions of these files haven't been archived but a slighty modified version (with an advertisement text file injected) can be found here.

If you don't need the original original 2.1 ZIP release, grab version 2.1, 2.2 or 2.2B from the table below (or the patches section). There is probably no reason to pay any attention to versions 2.1 and 2.2 - you'll best running version 2.2B.

Version Server Workstation Notes
2.1 NIPS21.EXE, Readme NIPW21.EXE, Readme The readmes in the original ZIP release of 2.1 seem to contain a bit more detail: Server Readme, Workstation Readme
2.2 nips22.exe, Readme NIPW22.EXE, Readme This is the version on the IntraNetWare 4.11 CD
2.2B NIP22B.EXE, Readme NIPW2X.EXE, Readme

NetWare 5.0/5.1

NetWare/IP is available for NetWare 5 but only as an unsupported product. I don't have a NetWare 5 license so haven't had a chance to play with it but the files are: nwip600.exe and its readme file.

The NetWare/IP implementation for NetWare 5 does not include the DSS Server. As this is a required component of NetWare/IP you'll need to run at least one instance of NetWare 4.11 or 4.2 to act as a DSS Server.
